All Eyes Are on Cardano’s Vasil Upgrade After Ethereum Merge

With the success of Ethereum Merge, all attention is now on Cardano and its upcoming Vasil hard fork.

Originally, Vasil was scheduled to release on June 29 but then was delayed as the team had discovered many bugs and a heightened approach triggered after Terra’s collapse.

At the beginning of September, Input Output (IO) confirmed the rollout date is September 22. Two weeks later, the developers confirmed that the upgrade remains on track for release.

    Opening Up Cardano global adoption

Vasil belongs to Cardano’s Basho era which is about optimization and improving the chain’s scaling and interoperability. Basho is seen as an important step to realizing the chain’s global adoption by enabling high transaction volumes.

Specifically, Vasil will achieve optimization through a series of enhancements, including diffusion pipelining, for more efficient block propagation and implementing several Cardano Improvement Proposals (CIPs).

“The upgrade will bring significant improvements using Cardano’s hard fork combinator (HFC) approach and enhance the network’s performance by increasing throughput, script efficiency, and reducing latency in block transmission.”

Three indicators must reach “critical mass” to trigger the Vasil mainnet upgrade.

    • 75% of the mainnet blocks must be created by Vasil version 1.35.3 node candidate.
    • 25 exchanges must have upgraded to the latest software version.
    • The top 10 dApps (by TVL) must confirm the use of version 1.35.3.

As of September 15, 98% of block production was done using the updated software, meaning that the stake pool operators (SPOs) have done their part.

IO has divided exchanges into “top” and “other” based on the volume of ADA they handle. In total, across both categories, 21 exchanges are ready.

However, some of the top exchanges are still working on implementing the upgrade, including Coinbase, XT.com, and HitBTC while ZB.com has yet to start the process.

About dApps, IO has listed 12 projects, half of which have completed testing and are ready to go live. However, at the time of this writing, Minswap, SundaeSwap, MuseliSwap, ADAX Pro, VyFinance, and Meld have yet to complete testing.

In a nutshell, the Vasil upgrade is waiting for a handful of exchanges and dApps to accept the updated version.
