Epic Games Will Not Ban NFTs in Games

Cryptory.net - Developers should be free to decide how to build their games, said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney.

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney said his company “definitely won’t” follow Minecraft’s lead and ban NFTs. As we all know, Mojang Studio, the developer behind the popular 8-bit open world game Minecraft, announced on July 20 that it will no longer welcome blockchain technology, including NFTs on its platform. They worry NFTs will create inequality and could lead to a less joyful gaming experience for users.

This move of Mojang Studio has caused a lot of controversy in the NFT community. A group of gamers who are skeptical about cryptocurrencies, of course, support the decision of the company. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, on the other hand, said his company will not force any extreme views onto its users:

“Developers should be free to decide how to build their games, and you are free to decide whether to play them. I believe stores and operating system makers shouldn’t interfere by forcing their views onto others. We definitely won’t.”

In response to the post, Twitter user @Low5ive asked Sweeney Epic Games how the “hateful/discriminatory content” policy differs from this. Sweeney replied that Epic Games does make “editorial” judgments but NFTs are not included. The NFT ban by Mojang Studios has put many projects in trouble, including NFT Worlds because it is a derivative game from Minecraft and has NFT elements. The NFT Worlds representative was surprised and is trying to contact Minecraft’s developer to find a solution.

NFTs are still a controversial topic in the gaming industry. Besides big players that support NFTs including Ubisoft, Square Enix, Epic Games, etc., there are also many companies that have come out against crypto/NFT such as Discord, Steam, STALKER 2.
