Ethereum Completes Final Testnet Merge on Goerli

The third and final testnet Merge has successfully gone live on Goerli. The day Ethereum moves to Proof-of-Stake is closer than ever.

Ethereum has entered the final sprint for the much-anticipated Merge event after Goerli, the third and final testnet, was successfully transitioned to PoS.

The Goerli testnet merge was announced at the end of April, divided into two phases, starting with the Bellatrix upgrade on Aug 4. The second step, called Paris, was activated today after Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD) on Goerli hit 10,790,000.

For the last testnet proof-of-stake transition, developers merged Goerli with Prater, a Proof-of-Stake beacon chain, which is a testnet that specializes in testing node validator actions, particularly those that simulate staking. Node operators from both chains will also perform their client software updates simultaneously.

According to the Ethereum Foundation, the Goerli Merge is the final opportunity for users to ensure that their PoS validators are configured correctly before the mainnet transition.

Earlier this summer, the Ethereum team successfully deployed The Merge on the Sepolia and Ropsten testnets. Bringing The Merge to testnets is necessary to ensure the upgrade works appropriately before the mainnet launch.

As reported, The Merge is the most significant upgrade in Ethereum history. When the process is done, Ethereum will officially replace ETH mining Proof-of-Work (PoW) mechanism with Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mechanism to improve network scalability and be more environment friendly by more than 99%.

According to the official schedule decided by the development team, the next step will perform the full merge on the Ethereum mainnet. The final upgrade is expected to take place in September. After the news, Ethereum surpassed the $1,900 level and is currently trading around the $1,868 level on Binance.
