Twitter Launches New Feature for Users to Set NFT Profile Picture

NFT owners can now advertise and display their assets through Twitter ‘soft hexagon’ profile picture.

Twitter announced Thursday a new feature for users to link non-fungible tokens (NFT) to their profile pictures — if they pay for a $2.99 Twitter Blue subscription and are using an iOS device. Once done, the Twitter profile will display in a hexagonal shape instead of a circle, and users will be able to click the picture for information about the associated NFT.

The giant social media platform is also planning to bring the new feature to its Android and Web version but hasn’t mentioned a specific timeline for doing so. For non-subscribers, Twitter hasn’t yet made a decision as to whether or not it will make the feature available at some later date but note it will monitor feedback on Twitter Blue and make additional updates soon.

“This new feature provides a seamless, user-friendly way for people on Twitter to verify their NFT ownership by allowing them to directly connect their crypto wallets to Twitter and select an NFT from their collection as their new profile picture,” explains a Twitter press release.

Notably, there will be some limitations on which NFTs can be linked to profile pictures. At first, Twitter is currently supporting several crypto wallets that users can connect to their profiles and verify their NFT:

    • Argent
    • Coinbase Wallet
    • Ledger Live
    • MetaMask
    • Rainbow
    • Trust Wallet

Alternatively, the social media platform only allows NFTs minted on the Ethereum blockchain. Users need to link Ethereum wallet to the Twitter account to access a list of NFTs they own, then choose one and set it as profile picture.

This feature proves an incredible technology integration adding real utility for verified digital items. It’s also an unmissable signal pointing out NFT owners that you can follow to know more about their items or block them before they try to sell you some of their blockchain receipts.

Twitter’s move follows the growing trend of people using images linked NFTs to profiles pictures on social media, such as cartoon apes of the Bored Ape Yacht Club. By allowing users to officially designate their NFT profile picture, it can perhaps be read as an effort to combat another online trend.

It also marks Twitter’s latest foray into “decentralized” technologies. In July, Twitter’s founder and then-CEO, Jack Dorsey, said bitcoin would be a “big part” of the company’s future.  Last year, Twitter built a crypto team to focus on cryptocurrencies, blockchain, and related technologies. In September, the company introduced the ability for users to tip creators using bitcoin.
