What is Damus – New Web3 Social Media Platform

Cryptory.net - Touting itself as the “Twitter Killer”, Damus aims to cut censorship from social interactions while serving as the go-to end-to-end messaging setup.

Damus is known as a decentralized, censorship-resistant social media platform, which is described as an alternative to billionaire Elon Musk’s Twitter. It is becoming very popular in the Bitcoin community because of its support payments over Bitcoin’s Lightning Network.

Damus is built on Nostr, a social media protocol focused on data management and decentralized identity. Damus also offers many features like Telegram, easily integrating bots that automate users’ business. The app also sends notifications when your servers go down, repost to your team and collaborate in real time.

Besides Damus, other apps on Nostr include Branle – a Twitter-like Nostr client, Anigma – a Telegram-like messaging app, Nostros – a mobile client, and Jester, a chess game.

Both Nostr and Damus came to the attention of former Twitter  CEO Jack Dorsey, who in December 2022 donated 14 BTC, worth $245,000 at that time, to the Nostr team. Dorsey also retweeted the post that the Damus app had been approved on Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store, calling it a milestone for open protocols.

Dorsey’s post has gained the attention of the Twitter community, including former US intelligence agency employee Edward Snowden who has always emphasized privacy.

Web3 Social Media Platform Damus has launched on the App Store and used to have over 40,000 users. However, on Feb 3, Damus was pulled from the China App Store per request by the country’s top internet watchdog because it includes content that is illegal in China.
