“World Wide Web – WWW” Source Code NFT Sold for $5,4M

30 years ago, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, also known as "www". 30 years later, he sold this source code as a non-fungible token (NFT) for $5,4-million.

In 1989, Physicist-turned-computer-scientist Berners-Lee conceived a system of information sharing that would allow scientists to access data from anywhere in the world. He named his creation the World Wide Web (www).

After that, in 1990 and 1991, he wrote the program that created the first internet browser, laying the practical foundations for the current web. In the process, he also invented the URL — internet address–, HTTP — which allows users to find a site — and HTML — the standard coding language for creating websites.

Aimed at making the web an open space, Berners-Lee didn’t charge his program but left it freely available to everyone, which contributed to its spread. His works have opened a whole new world for humanity.

A little more than three decades after his invention, Berners-Lee put the original program files up for sale as a collector’s item in NFT form. This asset has been sold for $5,4-million. At the end of the auction, Berners-Lee donated all of his sale profit to charity.

Tim Berners-Lee’s original World Wide Web source code has been for sale as NFT

Included in this purchase are NFTs representing around 9,555 lines of code written in 1990-1991, a 30-minute animated visualization of the code, a digital poster of the code, and a digital letter written by Berners-Lee in June 2021, talking about the invention of the Web.

    In the letter, he wrote:

“𝘐𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘶𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘰 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘥𝘦. 𝘐𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘦𝘸 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘥𝘦, 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘵, 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘣 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘸.”

Berners-Lee’s 30 years old asset could gain such tremendous profit partly based on the development of NFT and Blockchain technology. The unstoppable spreading of digital assets has helped people easily approach and become the owner of a pivotal part of human history.

Following the success of NFT, there are a bunch of potential blockchain-based projects that expect to explode in 2022. DeFiHorse, the most awaited horse racing game, is one of those. This game promises to make another big thing with mind-blowing graphics and creative play-to-earn mechanisms.
