According to the announcement posted on the November 11 evening, crypto exchange FTX filed for bankruptcy for both FTX.com (serving world users), FTX.US (serving US users), Alameda Research investment fund, and more than 130 subsidiaries in the FTX network.
Bankman-Fried resigned as chief executive officer of the FTX Group as part of the filings and John J. Ray III was appointed to replace him. However, Sam will continue to accompany FTX in the process of calculating assets for bankruptcy under Chapter 11. FTX employees will also remain until further announcement.
Also in the bankruptcy filing, FTX stated that the company’s assets are in the range of $10-50 billion, and the amount of debt is also $10-50 billion.
Thus, after only 4 days since Changpeng Zhao exposed the exchange’s liquidity issue, FTX had to declare bankruptcy after being massively withdrawn by users, revealing a deficit of up to $8-10 billion. It is still unclear why the exchange has lost so much money while maintaining as one of the top trading platforms with millions of global users, but it is rumored that FTX used customer funds to prop up its owner’s trading firm.
FTT price has plummeted after the news.
In a statement posted later on Twitter, Sam Bankman-Fried once again apologized to users for what happened. Sam said he “was shocked” by the collapse of FTX – Alameda, and promised to provide more information in the near future.
