Veteran Bitcoin Developer Jeff Garzik Launches Web3 Film Company

Jeff Garzik, Linux and Bitcoin Core key developer, announced the launch of NextCypher Productions, an entertainment company that aims to use Web3 tools to produce independent science fiction films.

Jeff Garzik is no longer a strange name in the crypto space. He is known as the co-founder of Bloq, Spacechain, and Vesper Finance. Not only that, he is also one of the key members of the Bitcoin Core development team.

About the new project, Garzik said NextCypher allowed him to return to his passion for science fiction, one of the reasons that led him to join the crypto field. In Garzik opinion, the roots of Web3 can be found in the pages of Cyberpunk novels. This category includes popular titles like William Gibson’s Neuromancer, Neal Stephenson’s Snowcrash, and role-playing games like “Shadowrun” and “Cyberpunk.”

To kick off NextCypher, Garzik invested $1 million of his own fund to launch the first television project, Deathlands (based on Jack Adrian’s novel, produced by Altman and Vitale). Looking Glass, a groundbreaking idea of Garzik in the past, is expected to be released in 2023.

Besides, Garzik is also looking to leverage Web3 technologies such as NFTs in his productions, providing proof of ownership for works created by NextCypher. He affirmed that NFTs will be the gateway to the NextCypher Hollywood-plus experience.

“We tried to think of all the interesting, amazing, engaging ways that fans would like to be included in the process from literally the idea stage, all the way to post-production and streaming on Amazon or Netflix.”

Finally, Garzik shared that NextCypher’s development team is still figuring out which blockchain the NFTs will be minted on, but noted the direction is to avoid the high fees currently associated with Ethereum.

“We’re currently looking for the best home for that,” Garzik says. “So the default answer is an Ethereum-connected sidechain, like Polygon or Avalanche. We’re still negotiating among the projects to see where we’ll land.”

Jeff Garzik’s turning to a new path is not too surprising when we take a look at other Bitcoin Core key developers. As of late 2021, developer John Newbery and maintainer Samuel Dobson have left Bitcoin Core for personal reasons. Recently, Peter Wuille – another maintainer has also limited his activities on the project.
