Yuga Labs Warned of a Coordinated Attack Targeting NFT Communities

Cryptory.net - Yuga Labs, the parent company behind the expensive NFT project Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Apecoin (APE) has warned of a coordinated attack against multiple NFT holders and communities.

In a July 19 post, Yuga Labs said the security team of the company has been tracking a group of hackers who repeatedly targeted NFT communities through compromised social media accounts, and urged investors to be extremely cautious. Yuga Labs issued the warning just days after hackers attacked popular NFT platform Premint and stole around 314 NFTs and $375,000 in ETH. This was considered one of the biggest NFT hacks in 2022.

Premint is a NFT whitelisting platform that helps projects build their access lists and randomly selects the collectors and community members to win a spot. It has over 12,000 NFT projects and a database of over 2.4 million collectors. According to blockchain security firm Certik, the attack happened on July 17 after hackers planted malicious code into Premint’s website.  Affected users saw a pop-up asking them to verify their wallet ownership and once users did the verification, hackers had permission to transfer all of users’ tokens to their own wallets.

Six wallets were involved in the hack that own NFTs including Bored Ape Yacht Club, Otheride, Oddities, and Goblintown. Premint said it will continue to investigate the hack and reminded users that they would never be asked to sign any kind of transaction on the platform.

This is not the first time Yuga Labs has warned its community of a potential attack on social media. In June 2022, co-founder Gordon Goner once issued a warning of an attack related to Twitter insiders. Soon after, Twitter has begun to monitor activities on the accounts and strengthen their existing security.

Discord BAYC has been hacked twice with the loss of more than 200 ETH and 69,000 USD in just two months. BAYC’s Instagram was also hacked in early May 2022, resulting in multiple valuable NFTs being stolen from victims. So it’s easy to understand why Yuga Labs is being very careful with hacks.
