Meta Platforms Sued by Internet Computer Over Logo Infringement

Dfinity, a not-for-profit organization that develops the Internet Computer (ICP), has filed a lawsuit claiming that Meta's new logo is too similar to its own.

On April 29, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Platforms Inc has been sued by Dfinity for coming up with a logo that is so similar that could lead to confusion, confirmed by Attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben Intellectual Property USA.

According to Dfinity, its logo is also the “infinity” symbol, which was registered on October 9, 2018, at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Therefore, Dfinity has got full trademark ownership and intellectual protection to provide blockchain services under this logo. About the different colors, Dfinity noted that it didn’t claim the color palette as a feature of the mark and it has ownership rights on all variations of the logo.

Dfinity also accused Meta of being aware of the similarity between the two logos. However, Meta still intentionally broke the law by using the previously registered Dfinity intellectual property without any permission:

“Meta chose to proceed with its application to obtain registration in some of the same or similar areas in which Dfinity has already obtained registration for its mark.”

Such behavior has caused Dfinity to be underperforming in terms of revenue and will be severely impacted in the future:

“Dfinity would be severely harmed in its development of the Internet Computer and its ability to attract users if they were to associate Dfinity with Meta’s sordid online privacy history.”

Another main point of this lawsuit is that Dfinity doesn’t want to be relevant to Meta’s “terrible” reputation as the company has been implicated in data breaches, information trafficking, and many other scandals.

Till now, Meta has not yet shared any response regarding this lawsuit.

However, not only Meta but also ICP itself was also involved in many negative controversies last year.

Although once climbed to the 5th position on the market capitalization after being listed on major exchanges, ICP quickly plummeted, down 95% in just 2 months. Since then, there have been many speculations that Dfinity Founder is behind the ICP pumps and dumps for profit. ICP’s lawsuit against Meta is also considered a media trick to get back the company’s reputation as well as stimulate the curiosity of investors.
